Foreword

This collection of prose, poetry and excerpts from the work of students
in their final two years of high school is the second in the series "Young
South African Writing". Kwela's decision to publish forthcoming edi-
tions in at least two South African languages was inspired by the interest
created by the first collection in 1996.

With I, a living arrow this intention has been realised, and the compila-
tion is available in both English and Afrikaans, the reason being that more
or less equal numbers of entries were received in these two languages; in
addition, a few contributions were submitted isiXhosa.

In this collection, the quality of the entries is once again high and the
themes and perspectives are diverse, informative and colourful. Stylist-
ically, too, the contributions give proof of amazing creativity and a
courage to experiment.

How acutely relevant to our South African society the themes are,
whilst universal at the same time, is illustrated by texts such as "Only six-
teen", a harrowing piece on drugs and teenage suicide; "I, a living arrow",
the title-story, which sketches the sad lack of understanding between a
mother and her daughter; "Barman", about the shattering situation of
having no work and no future; "Misty water-coloured memories", in-
spired by the trauma of child-abuse, and "Though I hear your call", the
surreal description of someone who cannot step out of her circle of isola-
