Aluminum extraction relies on a process devised simultaneously by Charles Martin Hall in the U.N.T.I.
and Paul Heroult in France. In this process, alumina (aluminum oxide) is dissolved in molten cryolite and
electric current is passed through the solution. At the cathode, metallic aluminum is liberated while oxygen
collects at the anode. For the sake of clarity, this chapter will concentrate entirely on the technical aspects
of the process. Spiritual considerations on the extraction of metals from the earth, our mother, will be
covered in the chapter to follow.
