тАЬSure,тАЭ Cris says, but he sounds scared.

I never did this in Scouts, and I look at the wall. ItтАЩs real high. But I
scramble up. I donтАЩt know if we can pull Cris up, skinny or not. But I canтАЩt
think of anything else to try, so I brace my feet and lean way over the apple
branch.

тАЬCome on, Cris, IтАЩm going to boost you up.тАЭ Jeremy lifts Cris out of
his wheelchair. тАЬMan, you donтАЩt weigh any more than my little sister. Hang
on. IтАЩm going to try and step up on your chair.тАЭ

Jeremy grunts as he climbs very slowly and carefully up onto the seat
of the wheelchair. ItтАЩs not gonna work. тАЬReady, Melanie?тАЭ He wobbles a
lit-tle and I hold my breath. тАЬOkay, Cris, just reach up. Grab MelanieтАЩs wrists.
You grab CrisтАЩs, Mel.тАЭ

I canтАЩt reach him.

тАЬLean out as far as you can,тАЭ Jeremy gasps, his words hot yellow.
тАЬCan you stretch up farther, Cris?тАЭ

I canтАЩt. . . quite . . . reach him. Zoroan, Mr. Teleomara, will be back any
second.

The limb falls out from under me. I yelp, grabbing at the limb, then
CrisтАЩs face is right in front of mine.

тАЬGrab him, grab his wrists,тАЭ Jeremy is yelling. And I do, and CrisтАЩs
hands close around my wrists. And then weтАЩre swinging up and my arms
are coming out of their sockets, and then weтАЩre falling and my ribs hurt and I
see leaves, sky, leaves, and then . . .

... I land flat on the grass on my back and I canтАЩt catch my breath. Sky.
Leaves. Sky. I sit up and nothing hurts too much and Cris is lying on his
back, giggling softly.

тАЬWhat the heck happened?тАЭ JeremyтАЩs head pops up at the top of the
wall and a second later he scrambles down. тАЬYou guys okay? I swear that
tree just boosted you right over the wall. IтАЩm not kidding! You should have
seen it.тАЭ

тАЬItтАЩs an apple.тАЭ Cris sits up. тАЬThatтАЩs my birth tree. WeтАЩve got to get out
of here. That was a trap. ZoroanтАЩs trap. He had me imprisoned in it and was
draining my First Born power.тАЭ

тАЬRight now, I believe that.тАЭ Jeremy looks back at the castle. тАЬWow,
look.тАЭ

I look, and itтАЩs not a castle anymore. ItтАЩs this big, old, fallen-down
house, just like Jeremy said it would be.
