тАЬI do not believe there is a need now.тАЭ
тАЬThe Powers issued a Warning.тАЭ
тАЬDid they?тАЭ Pelo asked. тАЬThere was no Vision attached.тАЭ
Gift shifted. Had Madot acted on her own? He didnтАЩt like that. тАЬI have never wanted
special treatment,тАЭ he said. тАЬI want to be an apprentice like the others. Bring me up here
when the time is right, for them and for me. Please. If this is wrongтАФтАЭ
тАЬNo one has said itтАЩs wrong,тАЭ Madot snapped.
Pelo raised a single eyebrow. The effect made him look like a quizzical dog. тАЬI havenтАЩt
said it, but I should have. It is wrong. The boy does not belong here. He belongs with his

тАЬNear the other Place of Power?тАЭ Madot asked.
Gift had never seen her agitated before. She wasnтАЩt certain of what she was doing

for healing magic, not warrior magic. I am not a Domestic. IтАЩm a Visionary. The only

on it. You and your sister, with your wild magics, believe you are above Fey law and Fey
custom. You believed you could give her your Throne. But the Throne chooses whom it
will, and for centuries it has chosen your family. Your sister has denied her Feyness all

тАЬShe was raised by outsiders,тАЭ Pelo said. тАЬShe does not know our customs. She is
fierce, but she is no warrior. We have taken no land in fifteen years.тАЭ
тАЬMore than that,тАЭ Gift said. тАЬMy great-grandfather Rugad took no land for twenty
before that. He was waiting to hold Blue Isle.тАЭ
тАЬAnd now we have Blue Isle. Tradition says we move to Leut and conquer it.тАЭ
GiftтАЩs mouth was dry. He was suddenly thirsty. He and Madot had brought no water or
food with them. He wondered if that were customary or an oversight.
тАЬI have never heard a Shaman argue for war before,тАЭ he said.
 тАЬWe uphold Fey tradition,тАЭ Pelo said.
тАЬThere is much to Fey tradition,тАЭ Gift said, тАЬbesides war.тАЭ
тАЬWe do not believe in indiscriminate fighting,тАЭ Pelo said. тАЬBut now two Places of Power
are known. It is time to follow the prophecyтАФтАЭ
тАЬEnough,тАЭ Madot said.
тАЬNo,тАЭ Gift said, turning his head toward Pelo. Gift had always thought of that
movement as the royal movement, a command without giving a verbal order. тАЬIтАЩm
curious.тАЭ
тАЬAnd you are an apprentice,тАЭ Madot snapped. тАЬYou do as I say.тАЭ
тАЬIтАЩm only an apprentice when it suits you,тАЭ Gift said. тАЬIf I were truly one, I would be
below, learning how to control my Vision with the others.тАЭ
тАЬYou could control your Vision since you were ten,тАЭ Madot said. тАЬYou have no need for
such tricks. Which is why you can never be an ordinary apprentice.тАЭ
