Special thanks must go to many who contributed in one way or another to this fable: Sharon
and especially Jack Erwin; Bill and Louise Winter, who gave August his vitiligo, among other
things; Grandma Kaiser, who stitched Jonah's rabbit suit, and Jonah's parents, Peter and Judy
Steinhart; my friend Tom Hecker; Diane and Michael Flaherty; Buff Bradley, the Zen Baptist,
and Susan; Michael Murphy, who loaned me Reich; Patti Harris, who made the shirts; and Doc
Burgert, who has the ripest laugh west of Chicago ...

smelter of late June in Washington. What was being forged out there? He swiveled around and

"Yes. But where is he returning from?"
"Intergalactic space. He's been gone for ten years and is due to return today."
"Where is he landing?"
"Kankakee, Illinois. Augenblaue AeroSpace facility."
"I seem to remember something about the launch. What happened then?"
"He took off in the A.K.A. Monastic, and there was a riot in the stands."
"The stands?"
