тАЬI donтАЩt get it,тАЭ Nan replied. тАЬHow is itтАФwe grow up in the same house, we watched the same television shows, ate the same frozen dinners. .. Your background is no different than mine, you know. ItтАЩs no nature versus nurture thing here. We werenтАЩt separated at birth or anything like thatтАФтАЭ Jillian looked puzzled, not quite sure where her sister was going with this. тАЬSo what?тАЭ Nan rolled her eyes and swigged a bit more wine. тАЬSo what? So you land Johnny Rocket BoyтАФwho probably would have sent you flowers from outer space if he could haveтАФand I keep on ending up with subtly different models of тАШthrows up on himself Elmo.тАЩтАЭ She took another gulp of the wine and then winked slyly at her sister. тАЬAnd let me guess... IтАЩll bet heтАЩs good at the little things, too, isnтАЩt he?тАЭ тАЬWhat little things?тАЭ Jillian asked innocently. Her eyes were bright and she was smiling broadly, but she could not match her sister for brazenness. After a moment, she blushed and looked away, turning back to her vegetables. тАЬThose little things that mean so much,тАЭ said Nan, peering at her sister over the top of her wine glass. тАЬYou know what IтАЩm talking about, July.тАЭ тАЬMaybe,тАЭ she replied and blushed a little bit more. Nan laughed out loud at the truth she read in her sisterтАЩs eyes. тАЬItтАЩs true,тАЭ she said. тАЬMen are like parking spaces. Maybe you donтАЩt know that, but I sure as hell do.тАЭ The two sisters shared a laugh over that, Jillian shaking her head ruefully as she expertly diced a zucchini. тАЬThereтАЩs a man out there for you, Nan. Give it time.тАЭ тАЬHow much time is time,тАЭ Nan shot back. тАЬWait a minute, Jilly-o.. I know... Maybe, just . maybe, IтАЩm gay. Maybe thatтАЩs it. I could be gay, you know.тАЭ тАЬOh, Nan, you? You are not the type.тАЭ тАЬMaybe I could get to like it,тАЭ Nan countered. тАЬYou know, gay is pretty damn cool these days... or is that over already.тАЭ She considered that for a moment. тАЬNo, I think itтАЩs still pretty cool.тАЭ тАЬNan, stop it!тАЭ But Nan wouldnтАЩt stop it. She knew that anything that took her sisterтАЩs mind off of the space mission was good for her. тАЬWhat? You donтАЩt think I could be gay? I could be gay. I know if l really tried. Nan stood up straight squaring her shoulders against some formidable challenge. . .тАЬ тАЬOkay, Jillian, thatтАЩs it. ItтАЩs official. You have a gay sister, From now on I want you toтАФтАЭ Then she yelped in alarm. тАЬJesus Christ, Jillian! Be careful.тАЭ Nan was gaping at her sisterтАЩs slim hands. The silver blade of the chefтАЩs knife had sliced deep into her left index finger. Blood was spilling out among the green and yellow of the vegetables. But Jillian did not appear to have noticed. тАЬWhat?тАЭ Nan yelped. тАЬJill, what?тАЭ Jill did not respond. Rather, she was staring at the mute screen of the television set.
