Firebird felt her cheeks warm. тАЬYes, Master. I live among a people to whom a тАШtwenty-fiveтАЩ is a poor
cousin and a тАШninety-sevenтАЩ such as my husband a creature to be held in awe. Is it wrong to wonder?тАЭ

тАЬOnly natural, child. But consider this. The connaturality that drew him to you, the similarity of your souls,
is a function of spirit, not carrier. You cannot hope to match his ninety-seven, and I read you as a
competitive person. Does that make you hesitate?тАЭ

Firebird shrugged.

тАЬAmong us you are unique, Firebird, unqualified but vital in your role as shamev to the тАШLost of Auria
shaman. I would hate to see you lose the confidence of that prophecyтАЩs mystique.тАЭ

тАЬMystique.тАЭ Firebird wrinkled her nose. тАЬWhat about our children? WonтАЩt they be disadvantaged, with a
mother who cannot do for them what a Sentinel mother could do?тАЭ

тАЬMany children we train have one or even two parents who were ineligible, Firebird. That is not a
concern.тАЭ The elderly Master stared solemnly across her desk. тАЬIf I test your carrier strength and
background potential there will be no word of numbers to anyone, Mistress. I promise that. Do I have
your vow in return?тАЭ

Forgetting the risk of being kicked, Firebird leaned forward. тАЬAbsolutely.тАЭ

тАЬTo my knowledge, no one has ever screened a bonded individual, nor a pregnant one.тАЭ Spieth steepled
her fingers on the desk top. тАЬIt is always performed on the young and unwed. What influence that might
have on the resonal circuits, I have no idea. It should not affect your potential.тАЭ She paused. тАЬAnd it will
not harm the babies.тАЭ

тАЬYouтАЩre certain of that?тАЭ

тАЬAbsolutely. The apparatus acts as a highly effective receiver: it transmits nothing,тАЭ said Spieth. тАЬThere is
a facility available this afternoon. I can perform a preliminary scan, if you are still eager.тАЭ

Knowing Spieth would sense her elation, Firebird wondered if she should try to speak calmly.

Spieth stood and extended a hand. тАЬYou are. Come, then.тАЭ

==========

An hour later, Firebird tried to relax in a soft lounger and ignore a faintly nauseating sensation originating
in the pad at the small of her back and the lightweight, splayed-finger arrays Spieth had pressed gently
over her earsтАФa sensation of тАЬothernessтАЭ like what she felt when anyone but Brennen attempted
mind-access. It seemed to last forever. The vibration pulsed, throbbed, and changed minutely with each
burst. She tried to blank her thoughts as for sleep, as Master Spieth had directed, but her habitual
alertness prevented it, and despite the assurance she had given Spieth, she literally trembled with the
desire to score well.

Abruptly the pulsing stopped. She blinked hard.

Spieth appeared behind her and pulled the arched headset away, then helped Firebird upright. Anxiously,
Firebird examined the lovely old face for clues to the testтАЩs results. It betrayed no flicker of expression.
