About the Author

Phyllis A. Whitney was born in
Yokohama, Japan, of American parents, and
has also lived in the Philippines and China.
After the death of her father in China, she and her mother
returned to the United States, which she saw for the
first time when she was fifteen. This early travel
has exerted a strong influence on her
work; many of her novels are set in areas she has
visited in Europe, Africa, and the Orient,
as well as in the places she has lived.
Phyllis A. Whitney is the author's
maiden name (the A stands for Ayame, which is the
Japanese word for "iris.") She is a widow
and lives near her daughter in Virginia. In
1975, she was elected president of the Mystery
Writers of America, and in 1988 received the
organization's Grand Master Award for lifetime
achievement. She is also the recipient of the
Agatha Award for lifetime achievement given
by Malice Domestic.
Since 1941, when she attained her first
hardcover publication, she has become an
international success. More than forty million
copies of her novels are in print in
American paperback editions. Her novels for
adults now number thirty-seven, and her
devoted following has made best-sellers of
most of these titles, including The Ebony
Swan, Woman Without a Past, The
Singing Stones, Rainbow in the Mist,
Feather on the Moon, Silversword, and
Dream of Orchids.
