"Your dad will be home in a half-hour," Sam said, checking her watch. She had
arranged with Mr. Jacobs to have the evening off, and he had promised to be home
at seven-thirty. "Try not to wreck the place before then." Sam ran out the door,
and Becky and Allie stuck their heads out the front door. "Hey, Sam, good luck!"
one of the twins yelled.
Sam smiled back at them and gave them a wave before disappearing into the back
seat of the ear. They knew she was meeting an important photographer from a
modeling agency. Sam was glad they'd wished her luck. Even the monsters had
their occasional sweet moments.
Sam stared out the window as the car headed for Celeste's, a very upscale
cocktail lounge and restaurant with a back deck overlooking the ocean. Sam had
never actually been there before. But when she'd boldly called Flash to invite
him out for a drink, she'd decided to name what was reportedly the most
sophisticated place on the island.
Sam closed her eyes as she remembered the warning words of her friends. Both of
her best friends on the island, Emma Cresswell and Carrie Alden, had called her
within the past hour to warn her-again-about her meeting with Flash. Sam was
totally exasperated with them. After all, she had just seen them that afternoon,
and they'd told her enough about it then! Emma thought Flash was sleazy, and
that the risks of getting involved with him outweighed the benefits. Well, that
was easy for Emma to say. Emma was mega-rich, one of the Boston Cresswells. She
would never have to worry about money in her whole, entire life. And Carrie had
a tendency to be a real by-the-books kind of babe, a regular goody-goody. They
just don't understand me, Sam thought as she watched the island scenery whiz by
outside the window.
The sun was just beginning to set, and Sunset Island looked incredibly gorgeous.
The beauty of this place made Sam feel shivery sometimes. It was so totally
different from her home town, from anything she'd ever known. Sam thought back
to the au pair convention in the spring in New York City, when she'd first read
about Sunset Island in her au pair book. It had been described as a small,
upscale summer resort off the coast of Maine, famous for everything from the
dramatic architecture of its summer homes to its sandy beaches. The words
upscale and famous had caught Sam's attention right away, since she planned to
become both in the near future. How she would accomplish this she hadn't exactly
worked out yet, but rubbing elbows with the "haves" of the world had seemed like
a good start. Sunset Island had sounded like the perfect place for her.
Sam was the older of two girls in a seriously middle-class family in the tiny
town of Junction, Kansas. Sam hated Junction, she hated Kansas, she hated just
about everything about her life.
Sam's younger sister, Kuth Anne, loved Junction, as did her parents, and they
simply did not understand Sam's yearning for great adventures in faraway places.
Everybody in her family, for example, had been so pleased that she'd won a dance
scholarship to Kansas State for the fall. But the idea of staying in Kansas,
even going to college, made Sam's skin crawl. Surely there was more than that
out there for her! Well, Sam said to herself as the car pulled into the circular
drive in front of Celeste's, maybe this meeting will be the first step toward my
incredible future.
After Sam paid and tipped the driver, a doorman helped Sam out of the back of
the car. Sam gave him a little smile, and wondered frantically if she was
supposed to tip him, too. Probably. Rich people tipped everybody. When the
