to her reflection as she posed before the mirror in her room. She looked down at the Cosmopolitan magazine on the dresser, and changed her pose and expression to copy the cover girl's. "Incredible! Unbelievable!" she chanted at herself, trying to feel more confident. But something was wrong. Her eyes didnt look right-not sultry enough. She closed them halfway, and tossed her head so that her long red hair shimmered around her shoulders. Much better. She leaned closer to the mirror to make sure the eye thing didn't look stupid up close, and noticed a blemish threatening to emerge on her chin. "Oh great, that's just great," she said in disgust, dropping her pose and looking around frantically for her cover stick. "Yeah, the guy is really going to make me into a superstar with a zit popping out on my face," she muttered, trying to disguise the bump. Okay, so I'm nervous, Sam admitted to herself. But hey, it wasn't every day that a girl got to have cocktails with a photographer from Universal Models, one of the biggest modeling agencies in the country. It was probably the most glamorous thing that had ever happened to her. So far, anyway. Sam thought dreamily back to how she had first met Flash Hathaway. It had been at a party at Howie Lawrence's house. Flash had told his assistant, Leonard Fuller, to give Sam his business card. That was just before he had told Sam she should be a model. It wasn't the first time Sam had been told that. At five feet ten inches, with her long, slim frame and wild red hair, Sam had heard that line often enough. But she had never heard it from a photographer from a top modeling agency before! "Yo, Sam, the car service is here!" one of the twins shouted up thirteen-year-olds whom Sam could tell apart only by the beauty mark over Allie's mouth. Sam was their au pair for the summer. The twins' father, Dan Jacobs, had hired Sam through the National Au Pair Society. Looking after two teenagers had sounded easy enough, but the twins were so wild and precocious (for example, they had recently decided not to "date" any guys under the age of sixteen, because they'd be "way too immature") that Sam really had to watch them like a hawk. Since Sam had taken this job to have a wild summer herself, watching over "the monsters," as she had dubbed them, was not her idea of a good time. Sam checked her reflection one last time. She had on her tiniest white Lycra miniskirt and a neon-orange bra top under a cropped white jacket. Her hair was sprayed into a huge mass of red waves and curls, and her orange matte lipstick matched the orange of her bra top. In her white high-heeled ankle boots she stood over six feet tall. Sam, you will knock him dead, she assured herself as she grabbed her purse off the bed. "Wow, that outfit is way cool," Allie breathed when she saw Sam running down the stairs. "Can I borrow it sometime?" "Nope," said Sam, retying the laces on her right boot. "How come?" Allie whined. "Because it's too old for you," Sam said, grabbing a jacket in case it got cold later. "Oh, right," Becky snorted, coming up next to her sister^ "I'd fill out that top better than you do." Sam rolled her eyes. Unfortunately Becky was right. The driver outside honked the horn impatiently. |
