He took a sip of his Coke. "Did you see when that fat lady kissed him!" his kid brother Wills asked. "Megadeath!" He held his throat and pretended to strangle himself. "Eeee-yew!" the Jacobs twins cried out in unison. "That was like the grossest thing I've ever seen," said Becky. "Totally," Allie said. Well, that's unusual, Carrie thought to herself with a smile. They're actually agreeing on something. "Hey Ian," Becky said, fluttering her heavily mascaraed eyelashes at him, "do you think your father can get the band-our band-on Donahue?" Carrie chuckled. The Jacobs twins had recently joined Ian's group, turning Lord Whitehead and the Zit Men into Lord Whitehead and the Zit People. And she knew that Ian, who looked young for his age, had a crush on Becky Jacobs, who along with her sister was quite well-developed and dangerously precocious for fourteen. "Don't know," Ian said noncomittally. "Maybe." "Well," Allie said, "it sure would be good for our careers." "Uh-huh," Becky added. "I mean, any publicity is good publicity." Carrie saw Sam roll her eyes. She and Emma started to laugh. "I'll, uh, see what I can do," Ian said as emphatically as he could. "Let's go get something from the buffet." All the kids stood up and took their plates over to the buffet on the far wall. "Ah, sweet silence," Sam said. The girls all laughed. "What's your schedule for the rest of the day?" Emma asked Carrie. "The usual," Carrie replied, taking a bite of a piece of bread. "Graham and Claudia come home tonight. Thank God. I haven't seen Billy in days. How about for a change." "Get down Emma!" Sam cried. Carrie smiled. For the last two summers, Emma had been involved in a major league romance with Kurt Ackerman, a very buff guy who lived year-round on the island. To help put himself through college, during the summers he worked days as the head swimming instructor at the country club and evenings as a taxi driver. "Did you talk to Kurt about, well, you-know-what?" Carrie asked quietly. Okay, I won't say it out loud, she thought to herself I'm sure Emma knows I'm talking about our trip out to California, where she had a hot and heavy romance with- Just then a loud argument broke out by the buffet table, where an embarrassed Ethan was blaming his brother for spilling a ladle full of gravy on him in front of the ultra-cool Jacobs twins. "My kiddies call," Emma said, throwing her napkin down and heading for the buffet. "You didn't answer her question!" Sam called after Emma. "Call me later, after my date," Emma called back to her friends. "I'll tell you then." "You got it," Sam yelled. "This could be the best gossip of the summer!" She turned to Carrie. "You think she told Kurt?" "Honest Emma?" Carrie said. "I say she told him." "You think?" Sam asked. "Not me. If she had told him, she'd be one sad little heiress." "Oh, come on," Carrie said, sipping her diet Coke. "Kurt loves her. He'd forgive her." "Carrie babe," Sam replied. "You sure do not know guys very well." Sam looked over at Emma who had managed to calm the feud between Ethan and Wills. "If Kurt Ackerman knew the truth about what Emma did, he'd drop her like a hot potato." TWO.
