Ian had recently joined the club's under-15 baseball team, so in addition to the usual swimsuits, snorkels, and towel bags, he had his uniform, bat, spikes, catcher's protective gear, and mitt stashed in his duffel. "Last one in's a rotten egg!" Ian said, as he ran madly from the car to the front door. "No one's getting in the house without my key," Carrie said pointedly, as she helped Chloe out of her seat. Within fifteen minutes she had Chloe and Ian inside eating a predinner snack and watching a movie in the VCR while she put together a simple dinner for them. "Carrie, you want to watch the movie with us?" Chloe came into the kitchen to ask. "No thanks," Carrie replied, as she poured a jar of pasta sauce into a pan to heat it. "I'm kind of busy now." "Okay," Chloe answered. "I'm going to wear my special hat while I watch," she added~ Carrie smiled to herself. Life's pretty simple when you're four years old. Maybe my day would be a lot less nerve-wracking if I wore a special hat, too. I'll make a mental note to have a fashion consultation with Sam. Carrie left the sauce to simmer, then headed to the answering machine in the hall to check for messages. The red light on the machine was blinking. She flicked the play button and took out a pen and paper. "You have three messages." Beep. "Thursday, one-forty-two P.M.," the mechanical voice said. Beep. "Hi, Carrie, it's us," indicated Claudia's voice. "Just wanted you to know that we'll be in tonight as planned, on the nine o'clock ferry. Did you guys see See ya!" Beep. "Three-fifty-six P.M. Hello, this is Zetta Hunter," said a voice with a thick British accent. "I'm with Rock On magazine in New York. Rock On is planning a story on the teen children of current pop stars, and I would like very much to speak with Ian Templeton and perhaps interview him for this story. Could Ian and one of his parents please ring me up promptly?" She gave a phone number. "Thank you!" Carrie played the message again and double-checked the number. Hmmmm. Interesting. I wonder what Graham and Claudia are going to think about this. - Beep. "Five-fifteen P.M." Just missed this last one, thought Carrie. "Hi Carrie, it's your mother! How are you, honey! Look, Dad and I were thinking about taking off a few days and coming up to see you on your island. Maybe we'll take a day and go to Ogunquit while we're there. We'll be home tonight after seven-thirty. Give us a call. Love you! Bye." My mother. Wow. They never take short trips. They go for three weeks on a safari in Africa, or they go on a trip to the Amazon, or . . . well, this could be fun. I'd really like Emma and Sam to meet my parents, and Graham and Claudia too. I mean, they're not bad-for parents. Carrie smiled to herself. Don't I have practically the only mother in the world who actually approves of my boyfriend even though he has a pierced ear? "Hey, Carrie!" Ian's voice cascaded down the stairs and interrupted her train of thought. "What?" Carrie responded. "Did I hear my name on one of those messages? Was it Becky?" he asked hopefully. "Uh, no, not exactly," Carrie said. Oh hell, she thought to herself. I was going to keep that message a secret until I could tell Graham and Claudia about it. |
