Cute.

тАЬYeah, her tour kicks off in New York on February 14,тАЭ Daniels says. He
nudges our shoulder. тАЬHowтАЩd you like to be the opening act?тАЭ

Opening act. Right. You know what kind of act he wants us to be.

Should we refuse? Like we could.

We turn away from Daniels and start toward her.

тАЬAttaboy,тАЭ Daniels says behind us.

The CCA honchos move away from her as we approach. Her hair is even
longer now, and her skin is smooth and healthy. Her eyes are a bright green, like
sunlight shining through emeralds.

тАЬYouтАЩre Willie Todd,тАЭ she says, extending her right hand. тАЬIтАЩm Lydia Love.
Congratulations on the album. ItтАЩs good work.тАЭ

Our fingers touch hers with a snap of electricity. We jump, then laugh.

тАЬDanny Daniels played me some songs from your own new album,тАЭ we say.
тАЬThey sound okay too.тАЭ

She smiles at the understatement. тАЬGee, thanks.тАЭ She tilts her head, and her
hair falls over one eye. тАЬDid he mention that IтАЩd like you to open for me on the tour?
Your music makes you sound like a guy I could get along with.тАЭ
 For a while, maybe.

But a while is better than never. A while is all anyone ever has.

тАЬMaybe we could talk about it after the party,тАЭ we say.

тАЬMaybe we could,тАЭ Lydia says.

And so the cycle comes back to its beginning. But now Lydia isnтАЩt the only
one who can play the phoenix game.

Across the atrium, Daniels raises his glass to us.
