тАШHeтАЩs brighter than I thought he was,тАЩ Veltan told his sisters. тАШIf we
awaken the others before the end of our cycle, we can raise them as if
they were our children and prepare them for anything that might happen
after weтАЩve gone to our rest.тАЩ
тАШAnd then they can return the favor at the end of their cycle,тАЩ Zelana
added. тАШI get to mother Eleria this time, and then she mothers me next
time.тАЩ
тАШIt sounds fair to me,тАЩ Veltan said. Then he paused. тАШWeтАЩve been
strangers to the others for far too long, I think. We all have the same
responsibilities, so a bit of cooperation might be in order. IтАЩm still not too
happy that you didnтАЩt tell the rest of us what you had in mind, Dahlaine,
but we can set that aside for now. WhatтАЩs next?тАЩ
тАШFirst off,тАЩ Zelana said, тАШI donтАЩt think we want to get too specific about
whatтАЩs happening when weтАЩre speaking with our Dreamers. TheyтАЩre still
children, and children are impressionable, no matter what their species.
We donтАЩt want to contaminate their dreams by explaining what these
dreams really mean. Mother Sea might not like that very much, and she
might decide to exile all four of us to the moon, not just Veltan.тАЩ
тАШYouтАЩre probably right, Zelana,тАЩ Dahlaine agreed. тАШLetтАЩs keep the
dreams as pure as we possibly can.тАЩ He scratched at his chin
speculatively. тАШWeтАЩve got a problem now,тАЩ he said. тАШThis first dream is
likely to bring the creatures from the Wasteland swarming across the
mountains, and our people wonтАЩt be a match for them. I think weтАЩll have
to bring in the outsiders.тАЩ
тАШAbsolutely out of the question!тАЩ Aracia exclaimed. тАШOur people are
pure and innocent. The outsiders are barbaric monsters. TheyтАЩre almost as
bad as the creatures of the Wasteland.тАЩ
тАШNot quite, Aracia,тАЩ Dahlaine disagreed. тАШWe can manipulate them if
we need to. The only problem I can see is linguistic. The outsiders donтАЩt
speak the same language our people speak.тАЩ
тАШThatтАЩs not a problem, Dahlaine,тАЩ Veltan told him. тАШIтАЩve looked in on
several of the outsider cultures. Their babbling didnтАЩt make any sense at
first, but I found a way to get around that.тАЩ
тАШOh?тАЩ Dahlaine said. тАШIтАЩd like to hear about that.тАЩ
тАШAll you have to do is step around language and go straight to thought.тАЩ
тАШHe has a point, Dahlaine,тАЩ Zelana said. тАШIt didnтАЩt take me much more
than a week to learn the language of my dolphins. If you listen with your
mind instead of your ears, it comes very fast.тАЩ
тАШInteresting notion,тАЩ Dahlaine mused. тАШUnfortunately, I donтАЩt think
people could do that.тАЩ
Veltan shrugged. тАШIтАЩll do it for them, then.тАЩ
тАШWould you like to clarify that, Veltan?тАЩ Aracia asked.
тАШItтАЩs a little complicated, dear sister,тАЩ he replied. тАШAre you sure you
want all the details?тАЩ
Aracia shuddered. тАШSpare me that, please. Just tell me what the results
are likely to be.тАЩ
тАШThe outlanders will babble in their own language, and our people will
babble in ours. Neither group will hear babbles, though. TheyтАЩll think that
theyтАЩre listening to their own language, so theyтАЩll understand each other
perfectly.тАЩ
