тАШNo, baby brother, IтАЩm not. The pearl - and quite probably that whale
as well - arenтАЩt what they seem to be.тАЩ
тАШOur sister believes that Mother SeaтАЩs starting to tamper with things,тАЩ
Dahlaine said them, тАШand I think she might be right.тАЩ
тАШNow we come to the interesting part, big brother,тАЩ Zelana said
brightly. тАШJust exactly who and what are these children you so generously
gave us a few years ago?тАЩ
тАШThe Dreamers, of course, Zelana.тАЩ Dahlaine replied just a bit too
quickly.
тАШAnd?тАЩ she pressed.
тАШAnd what?тАЩ
тАШWhat else are they, Dahlaine? YouтАЩre so obvious most of the time that
the rest of us can see right through you.тАЩ
тАШYou didnтАЩt!тАЩ Veltan exclaimed, his eyes almost popping out as he
stared at Dahlaine.
тАШI donтАЩt quite -тАЩ Aracia began. Then her eyes bulged out as well.
тАШDahlaine!тАЩ she gasped.
тАШWell,тАЩ he floundered, тАШit was a kind of emergency, wasnтАЩt it?тАЩ he
asked plaintively.
тАШAre you insane? Veltan demanded. тАШThey canтАЩt be present during our
cycle. The world canтАЩt bear that much weight!тАЩ
тАШThey arenтАЩt very heavy right now,тАЩ Dahlaine replied defensively. тАШI
was careful to blot out their previous memories before I woke them, and I
modified them slightly to make them more closely resemble new-born
man-creatures. They sleep and breathe and eat food instead of light. Their
minds are still infantile, and they have no idea of who - or what тАУ they
really are, so their presence during our cycle wonтАЩt make the world
collapse. TheyтАЩre really nothing more than children, and our cycle will
come to a close before theyтАЩre fully mature and realize just who they
actually are.тАЩ
тАШYouтАЩve put the whole world at risk with this idiocy!тАЩ Aracia flared.
тАШCalm yourself, Aracia,тАЩ Zelana said. тАШNow that IтАЩve had time to catch
my breath, IтАЩm beginning to see what Dahlaine had in mind. If the
hideous thing in the Wasteland is on the verge of moving against us,
weтАЩll need all the help we can get, and the others have as much to lose as
we do. Besides, weтАЩve never gotten to know them, have we? TheyтАЩre
really very sweet. I didnтАЩt particularly like them before, but now that IтАЩve
gotten to know Eleria, I love her. That was sort of what you had in mind
when you came up with this scheme, wasnтАЩt it, Dahlaine? If we know
them and love them, we can trust them. IsnтАЩt that the short and the long of
this grand plan of yours?тАЩ
