Vicki thanked her.

тАЬHow you gonna do that?тАЭ Judd said. Vicki grabbed a volunteerтАЩs smock from a coat rack and walked
toward the elevator. Judd and Lionel gave her a thumbs-up as the doors closed.

Dorothy had fallen as she tried to run from the bombs. She was frail with leathery skin. Her hair was
thin, and she coughed violently during the conversation. Even when she wasnтАЩt talking, she wheezed
through tired lungs.

Vicki fluffed her pillow and tried to make her feel more comfortable.

тАЬThey said you came over from Northwest Community,тАЭ Vicki said.

тАЬIтАЩm in the cancer ward,тАЭ the woman said.

тАЬI have a friend who was over there this morning,тАЭ Vicki said, тАЬa boy about thirteen or fourteen, riding a
bikeтАЭтАФтАЬA blond kid?тАЭ Dorothy interrupted.

тАЬYes!тАЭ Vicki said.

тАЬWhat happened?тАЭ

тАЬHe asked directions. A couple minutes before the explosion.тАЭ
тАЬDirections where?тАЭ Vicki said. Dorothy rubbed her head.

тАЬHe was looking forKirchoff Road. Seemed like he couldnтАЩt get his bearings. He took off up the hill.
ThatтАЩs the last I saw of him.тАЭ

Ryan kept the flashlight off to save the battery. He inspected the windows and felt along the wall behind
the mattresses.

тАЬWhat are you doing?тАЭ Darrion said.

тАЬTrying to find a way out,тАЭ Ryan said.

тАЬI already checked.тАЭ

Ryan scratched at the windows to let some light through.

тАЬItтАЩs painted on the outside,тАЭ Darrion said.

тАЬWait a minute,тАЭ Ryan said excitedly. He pulled out his wrist messenger.
