He wanted to stop and catch his breath, but he knew he had to keep running. It was his only chance.

He heard the screech of tires. A car flattened a trash bin like a pop can. Ryan kept moving. He passed
houses with gang symbols spray painted on the outside.

He jumped the turnstiles of the elevated train. The cashier screamed at him. Ryan shouted back, тАЬCall

His legs were lead as he ran up the stairs. A pay phone.

Call Judd, he thought. No money in his pockets. He didnтАЩt have time anyway. Two doors slammed, and
the men were gaining on him.
People milled about, waiting for the next train. A businessman with his nose in the paper. A woman with
a frilly dress and tennis shoes. Ryan ran through the crowd to a chain-link fence at the end of the
