Water rushed down the slope right toward them. тАЬLook out!тАЭTaylorshouted as a meteor slammed into the crumpled school building. The rubble caught fire. Judd could feel the intense heat. They ran. Judd looked back and saw the asphalt melting in a wave Then he heard a hissing. The hot water gushed over them and took them both with it. Judd clung toTaylorwith all his might. The water had saved them from a fiery death, but where would it take them now? Judd went under, then recovered and gasped for air. It was difficult staying above the swells with his cuffed hands. He had lost all control. He was being led by the cascading water. Then Judd heard a roar. The earth split not far ahead of them, and the water was rushing into the gorge. Judd watched helplessly as they neared the edge. Before Lionel opened his eyes, he sensed the fire behind him. The heat was intense. The hair on his arms singed, and he buried his head in the dirt. He looked up. The gas explosion must have made the clouds look funny. He tried to move. His body ached, but it didnтАЩt feel like any bones were broken. Conrad sat a few feet away, shaking his head and squinting. тАЬYou should have gotten out of there while you had the chance,тАЭ Lionel said. тАЬI could say the same for you,тАЭ Conrad said. тАЬYou risked your life for me.тАЭ Lionel looked at the car.
