place to live, a little bit of money, the time to give her little boy what so many young mothers didnтАЩt
have. She had a lot, and she would not succumb to the temptations of self-pity. She would not. She
loathed whiners.

She could hear Pete out in the foyer talking to Jake. Reading him a story, she realized. тАЬThe Little Old
Lady Who Was Not Afraid of AnythingтАЭ? She winced. That had been one of JakeтАЩs favorite books prior
toтАжwell, everything. But he couldnтАЩt seem to stand the suspense anymore, and when the pumpkin said,
тАЬBoo, boo!тАЭ he always burst into tears, even if the pumpkin said, тАЬBoo, boo!тАЭ very quietly.

тАЬHe hasnтАЩt been doing too well with that one lately,тАЭ she yelled.

тАЬHeтАЩs hanging in with it right now,тАЭ Pete called back. тАЬHas his hands over his eyes, but IтАЩm going light
on the dramatic presentation.тАЭ

тАЬHe cries at the pumpkin.тАЭ

тАЬIтАЩll take it easy.тАЭ

Suit yourself, Lauren thought, annoyed. If he has a fit, though, youтАЩre going to deal with both of us.

Bread in the freezer, muffin mix on the shelves, flour and Toll House morsels and brown sugar on the
baked goods shelf at the top.

тАЬHe DOES NOT!тАЭ Lauren heard Jake shout suddenly.

тАЬThe very scary pumpkin say, тАШBOO! BOO!,тАЩ not тАШI gots a cookie!тАЩтАЭ

Lauren stopped putting things onto shelves and listened.

тАЬRight here,тАЭ Pete was saying. тАЬSeeтАФit says, тАШThe very big, very orange, very scary pumpkin says, тАЬI
have a cookie in my tummy.тАЭ тАЩтАЭ

тАЬYou a dumbass,тАЭ Jake said. One of BrianтАЩs words. Usually Lauren found a little bit of comfort in
hearing Jake using BrianтАЩs words, in the same way that she found comfort in knowing that he now
remembered his fatherтАФbut she wasnтАЩt sure how Pete would take being called a dumbass by a three-
year-old.

Pete was laughing. And an instant later, so was Jake. She leaned against the counter and put her head
down on it and cried. It was the first time Jake had laughed since the accident, since the awfulnessтАФand
by all rights she or JakeтАЩs father should have been the ones to make him laugh, and instead, he was
laughing at the man who seemed to want to take his fatherтАЩs place.

Lauren wanted to be happy with that breakthrough. A part of her wasтАФhearing Jake laugh again was
like music from heaven. But a big part of her was hurt and jealous andтАФyes, she admittedтАФbathing in
self-pity.
