She straightened up, wiped her eyes on the sleeve of her sweatshirt, and took slow, deep breaths until
she got over it. Brian was dead, and he couldnтАЩt be there for his son anymore, though he sure as hell had
been there when it counted. Molly was dead, and she couldnтАЩt be there for Lauren, or the plan. Mom and
Dad were dead, and shitty as that was, theyтАЩd been dead for a long time.

And if Lauren didnтАЩt get her ass in gear, the ice cream was going to melt all over the floor.

She heard footsteps in the hall and turned to see Jake riding on PeteтАЩs shouldersтАФand Pete had gotten
him through the back end of the foyer and past the dreaded mirror without so much as a whimper.

тАЬMama, Pete did the story wrong,тАЭ Jake said, and he had a real smile on his face. тАЬHe saidтАжhe saidтАжтАЭ
Jake started to giggle, тАЬthat the very big, very scary, very orange pumpkin said he gotted a cookie in his
tummy.тАЭ He wrapped his arms around PeteтАЩs eyes and leaned over his head, laughing again, laughing so
hard his head bobbed up and down and his belly shook. тАЬBut the pumpkinтАжto say, тАШBOO! BOO!тАЩтАЭ Jake
did those тАШboosтАЩ with the tremendous vigor Lauren always used to give them when she read the book.
тАЬAnтАЩ I say Pete is a dumbass.тАЭ

Lauren winced and said, тАЬI heard.тАЭ

Pete grinned at her. тАЬHe has his opinions, doesnтАЩt he?тАЭ

тАЬHe does.тАЭ She smiled at his son. тАЬThis is the happiest IтАЩve seen him. SinceтАжтАЭ She shrugged.

тАЬHeтАЩs a tough little guy,тАЭ Pete said. He swung Jake down to the floor, and Jake ran to her and hugged
her around the thighs.

Eric asked me to stop by and let you know, maybe run you by so you can set up her gate. She was going
to be staying with June Bug, but apparently Darlene is allergic to smoke, and June Bug said that at her
age sheтАЩs not going to be told to go outside her own doors to smokeтАФthe two of them did not get off on
the right foot at all.тАЭ

Lauren smiled a little. тАЬI donтАЩt see June Bug being any too happy about someone suggesting that she
make any changes, frankly. And anything involving those damned cigars of hersтАжтАЭ
