time. "You can't leave me in charge of the Guild for a month, maybe more.
There're thieves far more skilled than I. What if one of them challenges
me?"

"They won't, because none of them wants the Guild in the mess it's in
right now," Shadow said lightly. "Besides, I've been training you, and
you're getting good with a knife. Keep Cris with you. If anybody bothers
you, Cris can just burn the building down around all of you. That should
scare them off."

"Shadow, that isn't funny!"

see about giving you some more responsibility in the Guild."

"I'd like to prove myself to you right now-, before you leave," Aubry
grinned back.

"That's tempting," Shadow smiled. "But I've got one last thing to do
before I leave, and it may take some time."

"What's that?" Aubry asked.

Shadow glanced absently at the palm of her left hand.

"I've got to look up an old acquaintance."

"I've really gone to an amazing amount of trouble to find you," Shadow
said conversationally, apparently not intimidated in the least. "Have some
wine, won't you?"

Blade shook her head, her eyes narrowing.

"I remember you."

"You should." Shadow held up one slender hand, displaying a small,
dagger-shaped black mark on her palm.

"Shadow," Blade nodded. "Guildmistress of the Guild of Thieves."
