"No, the High Priest told us," the guard grinned. "Come on, we'll escort

Shadow followed the guards into the refurbished temple, eyeing the
new ornaments and tapestries. Quite an effort for only a year and low

The guards escorted her to a small room with only a table and two
chairs and one doorтАФthe door they'd come in through.

"This can't be High Priest Vikram's meeting hall," Shadow said
suspiciously. "What's going on?"

"This is a high-security matter, see?" the guard said patiently. "High
Priest Vikram can't be seen consorting with the Guildmistress, can he?"

"We're not consorting, just talking," Shadow scowled. "When will I see
him, anyway?"

"Soon enough," the guard said. "Now sit down and wait."

Shadow frowned but sat down, observing uneasily that two guards
remained in the room with her while the others left, locking the door
behind them.

Long minutes passed before the door opened; five more guards entered
with a novice priest.

"That's her," the priest said, looking at Shadow. Without another word,
he turned and left. One of the guards locked the door behind him.

"Now wait a minuteтАФ" Shadow began.

The guards were disinclined to wait.

"Well met, Guildmistress," Healer Auderic said as Shadow opened her
eyes. "As I remember, we last encountered each other under similar
circumstances."
