had expected to meet you again sooner, Guildmistress, after such a
spectacular start."

"Well, Fortune favor me, you won't be seeing me again anytime soon,"
Shadow grumbled. "I wasn't made to lie around in a bed by myself."

Auderic chuckled and packed up the rest of his medical tools, handing
Shadow a small vial.

"For pain, if your head or your cracked ribs give you any great
difficulty," he told her. "They're all but mended, but bone-healing takes
time. Take no more than two drops in a glass of wine. Send for me if you
have any more problems."

Aubry entered as the healer left. He sat down on the edge of Shadow's
bed and chuckled, eyeing her bandages.

"You've been very busy, I know"тАФhe grinnedтАФ"but there's easier ways
to find time for bed."

"And more interesting ways to play healer and patient," Shadow
grimaced.

"I'd be interested in knowing," Aubry said, "what herd of wild horses
stampeded over you and left you in a back alleyway of the market.
Fortune's right hand was on you, no question, that it was one of Uncle's
kids who found you, and that he went to Lady Donya and not some leftover
loyalist of Bobrick's with a grudge."

"Well, you very nearly answered your own question," Shadow grumbled.
"The Temple of Urex has a new cadre of ogres. I rather got the impression
that Vikram didn't want to talk to me very much."

"I don't agree," Aubry scowled. "I read a very definite message, mostly
written in black and blue. Maybe you should listen to it."

"Ah, this is nothing," Shadow shrugged, wincing as she did so. "But
what did Donya say?"

Aubry shrugged.

"She'd been by looking for you," he said. "Then she went to Uncle and
his imps, had them looking. She came back later with you, called the
healer, wrote you a note and left a packet, and then rode off right
afterward like a dragon was on her heels."

"I don't like the sound of that," Shadow frowned. "Let's see the note and
packet."

The note was penned hastily in Donya's plain but neat script.
