He tested it with both hands before placing one of his boots on the top rung,
gradually letting his weight rest on it. Satisfied that it would hold him, he
moved his other boot and began to descend.
First Haney and then Gleason joined him at the bottom. Gleason snapped several
photos before he even stepped off the ladder.
"Keep an eye on things here, will you, Mr. Sanders? " Wyan called. Sanders
followed with a crisp, "Yes, sir." Then Wyan disappeared down the ancient
staircase followed by Kenson.
Sanders tossed Bernstein a lantern. He switched it on and, holding it in front
of him, placed his foot on the first stone step. "Incredible, isn't it?" he
whispered to Haney, who was running his hand over the surface of the stone above
their heads.
"The steps assume the same degree of angle in their descent as the Grand Gallery
inside the Great Pyramid at Giza," Wyan called from below "In fact, the smooth
limestone walls you see are the same casing stones that once covered the outside
of the pyramid."
"Make certain you take samples and see if they match the remaining casing stones
in Giza," Bernstein instructed Haney.
"Sixty-four, sixty-five, sixty-six steps," Wyan commented as he reached the end
of the staircase. "The number of man."
Bernstein's team followed and came to a halt next to Wyan and Kenson.
"Dr. Bernstein, take note of the materials used in the construction of the
staircase. And do you see how the stones of this chamber seem to melt away and
become another material?" Wyan pointed out, holding his lantern above his head.
"How did they manage it?" Bernstein asked.
"The technology used here is still unknown to the human race ... at least
officially. But let us proceed." Wyan pressed forward.
Bernstein reached out and touched the wall of a perfectly cylindrical tube. "Any
idea of what it's made of?" he asked Haney. "So smooth, and yet it seems to have
the durability of granite."
Haney examined it, then shook his head.
"You'll find that it's many times stronger than granite," Wyan called. "This
passageway continues for another thirty meters, and then you shall see a wonder
before which the discovery of Tutankhamen pales."
The men continued and soon joined Wyan and Kenson at the bottom of the steps.
"It looks like we've hit the end of the tunnel," Bernstein announced, as his
team shone their lightsagainst the wall that now stood directly in front of
them. "This can't be all there is."
"Appearances can fool you," Wyan replied. "Look there." He pointed toward a
section of the wall. Sunk into the wall was the outline of a human hand with its
palm facing out-ward, human in its appearance except for one very important
difference. This hand had six fingers.
"Document that," Bernstein ordered.
Haney produced a tape measure and held it next to the impression of the hand.
Gleason snapped several pictures in rapid succession.
"What lies just behind this partition has been kept secret for almost two
millennia, but this is the window in history where our secret must be revealed.
We have announced to the presidents and heads of states of all the countries of
the world that a special sign will be given, demonstrating that we are not
alone. That sign is the reappearance of what, two thousand years ago, was
