He turned. "Mr. Kenson, I believe we need your assistance."
Bernstein watched Kenson approach the wall. He reached toward the imprinted hand
in the wall and paused for a moment so that his hand with all its fingers
outstretched stopped a few inches from the imprint. He looked directly at
Bernstein and spoke for the first time. "Almost a perfect match. Wouldn't you
agree, Doctor?"
Bernstein nodded uneasily as Wyan placed his hand in the imprint on the wall.
Though the print in which his hand rested was larger, all six digits were
accounted for.
What's he doing? Bernstein wondered. Kenson allowed his hand to rest in the
imprint for half a minute before with-drawing it.
"In a few moments we will see what's on the other side of this partition," Wyan
announced, as Kenson stepped back from the wall.
At first nothing happened, but then the edges of the wall began to shimmer and
vibrate, emitting an almost imperceptible low-frequency hum. The wall moved
upward into the ceiling, where it vanished, revealing a hidden chamber thirty
feet square.
"Incredible," Dr. Bernstein gasped.
"How did it rise of its own accord?" Gleason asked, while Haney recorded it all
on film.
"The physics of sound and vibrations. Everything has a frequency in which it
resonates. That is how the ancients were able to move the stones of the Great
Pyramid," Wyan explained. "But there is much more to it than that, and in any
case what the ancients knew was borrowed, of course, from the Watchers."
The group stepped into the chamber.
Bernstein looked around him. "What is that?" he asked, his voice shaking with
excitement. In the center of the room sat a large glasslike container from which
a dull yellow light emanated.
"See for yourself," Wyan said.
Bernstein hurried past Wyan and Kenson. "Astounding," he whispered as Haney came
up beside him.
Gleason changed rolls of film and began a new series of pictures.
Bernstein took a tentative step toward the container. "It appears to be a
high-tech sarcophagus," he exclaimed.
"And the body looks perfectly preserved," Haney added.
"Correct on both accounts," Wyan answered, "but take a closer look."
Bernstein felt Wyan approach and tower over him. "Look at the scars on his hands
and feet," Bernstein said, pointing to the hands that were folded together on
the naked body's abdomen, and then to the feet.
"Yes, and there." Wyan pointed. "That ugly scar in his side made by the spear of
Longinus, the Roman centurion."
"The marks of crucifixion," Kenson stated. He pointed toward the dead man's
shoulders. "Some of the scars from the whipping, where the three strands of the
whip curled around the body and tore into the chest area."
"Over forty lashes, according to the texts, " Bernstein added.
"See how the skin has been pulled and stretched there," Haney commented.
"Now you see why we have guarded this place so very carefully for two
millennia," Wyan said.
