PETER C. NEWMAN

COMPANY OF ADVENTURES
VOLUME III

Peter C. Newman, the author of a dozen best-selling books that have sold
more than two million copies, has spent the past decade on the most
ambitious literary project of his career: recreating the history of the
Canadian corporate world's oldest and most influential business empire-the
Hudson's Bay Company-which once ruled a twelfth of the earth's land surface.

Born in Vienna and educated at Upper Canada College, Newman holds a Master's
degree in economics from the University of Toronto, has worked underground
as a gold miner in northern Quebec, been a magician at Eaton's Toytown, and
served as a Captain in the Royal Canadian Naval Reserve.

He was editor-in-chief of The Toronto Star, the country's largest newspaper,
and editor of Mach, ans, which he successfully transformed into Canada's
first weekly news magazine. Peter Newman lives in Deep Cove, British
Columbia, where he is currently researching his next book on the Canadian
Establishment.

Company of Adventurers has been praised as "canny, vivid and critically
astute" by The Washington Post, while novelist Hugh MacLennan wrote of'
Newman's work: "This is not journalism; this is art."
For DOUG BEARDSLEY, the poet;
.JIM PAUPST and GEORGE SZASZ, the healers-,
and GEORGE WHrrmAN, the knight-errant
who helped in bad times.

And for my daughter LAUREEN NEWMAN,
with love.

"The working of A freat institutions is mainly
the result of a vast mass of routine,
petty malice, self-interest, carelessness, and sbeer mistake.
Only a residualfraction is thought.
-George Santayana
