"Yes," Blade confirmed, and scowled. "He gave his life in the line of
duty."

"Uh-oh," the trooper said.

"What's wrong?" Blade asked.

Pointing toward the bunkers, the trooper said softly, "A younger
brother of his showed up a couple of days ago to see him. When the
brother found out the captain wasn't here, he got real upset. He's been
staying in the barracks ever since."

"The barracks?"

"Yes, sir. I believe Doc Madsen gave him permission to sleep in Captain
Havoc's bunk."

"I see," Blade said thoughtfully. So he wasn't back three minutes and
already complications had developed, He didn't relish the prospect of
breaking the bad news to the brother. "Thanks for the information."

The Warrior and the hybrid hiked toward the bunkers, passing the pair
of gleaming VTOLs en route.

"Are you positive your new squad will accept me into their ranks?"
Grizzly inquired, his tone betraying a rare uneasiness.

"Since when have you been concerned about what others think?" Blade
answered. "Don't worry about the new team. They're a great bunch to
work with."

They covered ten yards in silence.

"I just thought of something else," Grizzly stated. "Which faction am I
going to represent?"

"Pick one," Blade said flippantly although he'd previously pondered the
same technicality. The Force consisted of a volunteer from each of the
Federation members, with every recruit agreeing to serve for a period of
one year, after which a replacement would be sent by the sponsoring
faction. All members of the Federation were represented with the
exception of California; Captain Havoc had been their volunteer and the
governor would undoubtedly select someone of his own choosing to
replace him. Leaving Grizzly in the cold, so to speak.
