news. I miss the company of my own kind."

Attempting to be dignified while on his butt on the ground, his chin
arrogantly upraised, Lobo glanced at the Warrior. "Is this true?"

"Yes," Blade verified.

"Is he replacin' Mike?"

"No. He'll be an extra member."

"Didn't think we needed one," Lobo muttered, warily regarding the
bear-man as he cautiously rose. "If we keep this up we'll be a full-scale
army in no time."

"Not hardly," Blade said, moving toward his bunker.. He paused to
watch Doc Madsen and Sparrow Hawk introduce themselves to the new
squad members. Now all he had to do was break the news to the
Federation leaders and one other person. The thought hardened his
features. That other person, none other than General Miles Gallagher, the
liaison officer between the Force and Governor Melnick of California, had
been systematically trying to destroy the unit for at least a year.

The Warrior turned and entered the HQ, walking down a flight of stairs
to his office. Once inside, he flicked on the light, closed the door, and sat
down behind the desk. Recent events unfolded before his mind's eye as he
tried to sort out the pieces of the puzzle.

General Gallagher never had liked the idea of forming the Freedom
Force. Almost two years ago, when Governor Melnick had first proposed
the idea at a Federation summit meeting in Anaheim, the general had
opposed it. Gallagher had claimed that California could take care of its
own problems and didn't need to foot the bill for an unnecessary tactical
team.

Blade had been surprised when the governor selected the general for
the liaison post. He'd gone along with the appointment because neither
Gallagher nor Melnick had a say in how the Force was run. As a
precondition to becoming the head of the unit Blade had demanded
complete authority and total autonomy. He'd figured he could prevent
anyone from meddling in the squad's affairs.

Little had he known!

During the ten months the first Force worked together, Gallagher had
reluctantly gone along with the program and been of marginal assistance.
Not until after the Force took on the minions of the infamous Lords of
Kismet in Alaska had Gallagher shown his true colors.
