The Red Carnelian

Chicago, 1943. Linell Wynn, a
copywriter for the Cunningham department store, is
happy with her job--but still feels hurt over a
failed affair with Michael Montgomery, the
company Casanova. The war is on, and good men
are hard to come by. It's bad enough when he runs
off and marries a younger employee, but it's
worse when the new bridegroom turns up dead
--his head crushed by a golf club.
Everyone at Cunningham's had a motive for
killing Montgomery. Particularly Linell.
Realizing she's a prime suspect, she
resolves to do some sleuthing on her own.
Linell soon discovers that some of her co-workers
are not what they appear to be; some very shady pasts
come to light. And when another corpse appears in
Cunningham's display window, Linell finds that
a red carnelian--a gemstone the color of
blood--holds the secret to cold-blooded

murder.

WINDOW DRESSING

The window decorators were forever leaving props
about behind the scenes and I stepped behind past the
unclad half figure of a mannequin, ducked
to miss a pair of silk stockings which dangled from
a hanger hooked carelessly on a strip of
framework. I reached the alcove which contained the
switch box and came to a dead stop.
