BE A BELIEVER! ============= CYBERNEWS The recent AT&T announcement of internet access may be good news for onliners, but prove devastating for independent service providers. Beginning March 14, ATT&T will provide access to the Net free for 5 hours a month to its long distance service customers, unlimited access for $19.95. Another perk of the deal is guaranteed line access (no more busy signals.) Commercial online services, Compuserve and America Online feel that business will be enhanced and expanded by AT&T's entry. As information providers with exclusive content, they note they offer a service distinct from simple access. AOL president Ted Leonsis hinted in the WALL STREET JOURNAL that the company will be making a series of announcements on pricing. ----------- Medusa's Hairdo ( a small press magazine) now has a homepage now -- not very interesting yet, but in progress. The address is http://sac.uky.edu/~bymoor0/medusa.html ---------- (CDA) by the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF), Electronic Privacy Information Center (EPIC), and several other plaintiffs, the judge has issued a temporary restraining order against a portion of the Communications Decency Act. Such injunctions against a federal law are rare, so this is good news. Other restrictions on free speech, however, were not enjoined by the court, and Internet users remain subject to criminal penalties for posting Constitutionally-protected material to public forums on the Internet. The temporary restraining order bars enforcement of the following section the CDA that deals with sending indecent speech: > (a) Whoever -- > (1) in interstate or foreign communications -- > (B) by means of a telecommunications device knowingly -- > (i) makes, creates, or solicits, and > (ii) initiates the transmission of, any comment, request, suggestion, > proposal, image, or other communication which is obscene or indecent, > knowing that the recipient of the communication is under 18 years of > age, regardless of whether the maker of such communication placed |
