publications, music, whatever that are. . .uh. . .dark.

NYX OBSCURA is not overly ambitious, but it covers a lot of graveyard turf.
Check it out and discover music and literature you might otherwise overlook.

NOTE: The ads in both these magazines, (particularly NYX OBSCURA,) are worthy
of some mention. They provides a veritable smorgasbord of dark delights in
the small press and music.

FYI: ABOUT THIS JOB. . .

In recent weeks and discussion of AOL and horror's place on it, I realized
that many of you didn't realize that none of the hundreds of moderators on
AOL are compensated beyond a few credit hours for the work they do with their
chats and workshops. Forum/area hosts are a different matter, but even they
are far underpaid. AOL is a community built on a lot of dedicated people's
talents.

As for the DF/HWW, it operates autonomously and without the direct
sponsorship of AOL. I work as a voluntary moderator for the hosts of the
Writers Club. They offer me guidance, support, a scheduled time, information,
some *official* status and promotion. But I also feel free to serve darklings
on the internet via the newsletter and web site as well as AOL. -- DE

CURRENT DF/HWW CONTEST
*The Sound of Darkness*

Whether your tastes are inclined towards "Phantom of the Opera," dark wave,
goth, heavy metal, folks songs about dead lovers, "Night on Bald Mountain" or
any number of entombed, eviscerated, poisoned or violently ended operas. .
.the combination of music and horror is a strong one.

We want stories that kick out the jambs with scare or haunt us with a
refrain. Please, no Elvis, Jim Morrison, Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, etc.
"hell of a band in rock and roll heaven" themes. Be imaginative and original.

DEADLINE: MidnightET, April 4, 1996

RULES:
1) Stories must contain some element of music and be able to be generally
classified as horror or at least "dark" fiction.
2) Word count should be under 5000 words. If you go over a few, okay, but we
just can't handle 8-10,000 stories.
3) Must be an original unpublished story, although it need not be newly
written for the contest.
4) Send entries as EMAIL (convert to ASCII first if your word processor
doesn't do that automatically; cut and paste or check AOL's guidelines for
cutting and pasting to email) OR attached ASCII of RTF file. In the SUBJECT
BOX type Your Screen Name (that is YOUR screen name, not "Your Screen Name.")
