The building collapsed behind Lionel.

A whistling, like air escaping.

тАЬGas leak!тАЭ Conrad said.

An explosion rocked the compound. Lionel and Conrad were thrown from the blast, along with the
shattered building. Lionel landed in the dirt. Monstrous black and purple clouds formed in the sky.

Ryan braced himself to hit concrete as he fell into the basement. He imagined landing headfirst and
splitting his head open. Instead, he twisted in the air and landed on his back. Something cracked, and he
felt a sharp pain. Then nothing.

The earth shifted again, and Ryan was rolled over. He lost his breath as something slammed onto his
back. He panicked, struggling for air and to get out from under the heavy load. When he couldnтАЩt, he
settled and slowly regained his breath. There was pressure on his chest but no pain. He tried to move
again.

IтАЩll just wait a minute, he thought. When the earth moves again, IтАЩll get out.

But the thing on his back didnтАЩt move. The pressure grew worse. It was hard to breathe. Then he heard
dripping. The flashlight was a few feet away, but Ryan couldnтАЩt reach it. He felt around in the mud and
found a splintered piece of wood. By scraping it against the flashlight, he pulled it close.

He shone the light on what was left of the basement wall. A stream of water rolled down the side and
collected in a pool. The water pipes had burst. If Ryan didnтАЩt get out from under whatever was on his
back, he could drown in less than two feet of water. The rumblings sounded different down here. Above
ground the noise spread out. In the basement, the sound was like the beating of a drum, and the drum
was the earth.

He turned the flashlight and craned his neck. A huge slab pressed into his back. He tried to move his
legs. Nothing.

Ryan scratched at the mud and clay beneath. It would take him hours to dig out. The shifting ground
might crush him by then. Or the water might be over his head.

He had to try. Ryan used the flashlight and dug with all his might.

Chaya struggled to free herself, but the weight of the beam was too much. Broken glass fell around her
as the earthquake rolled on. She could hear the screams of people in the street. She screamed too.
Furniture from the second floor toppled down. She tried to cover herself, but with each shudder of the
earth, more things fell.

She called out for her father over the noise. Finally, he answered.

тАЬI am here,тАЭ Mr. Stein said.

тАЬAre you safe?тАЭ
