Chaya softly sang a song from her childhood. Her mother had sung it to her at bedtime. Tears rolled
down her cheeks as she choked out the melody.

тАЬDo you remember that song?тАЭ she yelled.

тАЬI do,тАЭ Mr. Stein said.

тАЬI wish your mother was here with us now.тАЭ

Chaya could hear her father moving in the rubble nearby.

тАЬShe is in a much better place,тАЭ Chaya said.

The movement stopped.

тАЬWhat are you saying?тАЭ her father said.

тАЬYou do not wish your mother was here?тАЭ

A wall behind Chaya fell outward. Bedroom furniture spilled into the yard.

тАЬI am only saying that I am glad Mother is in heaven now and doesnтАЩt have to go through this,тАЭ Chaya
said.

Mr. Stein resumed his search.

тАЬI have not been able to talk with you about this,тАЭ Chaya said.

тАЬYou would not speak to me.тАЭ

Mr. Stein was close. Chaya felt a piece of wood lift from her shoulder.

тАЬTalk to me about what?тАЭ Mr. Stein said.
тАЬThat day at the hospital,тАЭ Chaya said.

тАЬBefore she died she wrote something. She was holding it in her hand.

It was a prayer.тАЭ

тАЬYour mother always wrote things,тАЭ Mr. Stein said.
