See if you can reach me. тАЬ

Chaya lifted her arm and strained. She felt her fatherтАЩs fingertips in the darkness.

тАЬA little farther,тАЭ Mr. Stein said.

тАЬMother gave her life to God before she died,тАЭ Chaya said.

тАЬShe believed in Jesus.тАЭ

Mr. SteinтАЩs hand went limp. Another surge of the earthquake brought a cascade of debris onto them.
Chaya lost her fatherтАЩs hand. She screamed. He did not answer.

Darrion prayed for her life. She prayed for Ryan and Judd. She prayed for Vicki. For Chaya. For
Taylor Graham and especially for her mother.

When the electricity went out, she was in total darkness. The shelter had no windows, but through the
ventilation shaft she could hear what was happening outside.

People ran from their homes screaming. The earthquake was so sudden,

Darrion couldnтАЩt imagine anyone being able to react in time. Then she thought of Sandy and Donny
Moore. She crawled on hands and knees to the massive shelter door. It was like trying to walk on a
moving teeter-totter. She managed to get the door open a few inches, but something had fallen on the
other side.

тАЬMrs. Moore!!тАЭ Darrion screamed.

No answer.

Donny will come for us, Darrion thought. HeтАЩll get us out of here.

Darrion closed the door and crawled under her bed. The quake was rearranging what little furniture
there was in the shelter.

Please, God, Darrion prayed, help me get out of here alive.

Vicki trembled. The sky was changing, and for the first time she saw the wreckage clearly. Beautiful
houses toppled into the river. People ran screaming into the street. Some fell into huge cracks in the
earth. Others seemed to want to die. The quake roared on and on. Like a hungry beast, it devoured
everything in its path.

Great mounds of asphalt shot upward. What Vicki couldnтАЩt climb over, she went around. It was slow,
but she figured her chances of survival were better if she kept moving.

But where was she going? An hour ago she sat in Mrs. JennessтАЩs office and watched her read the
Underground. Now the woman was dead, and Vicki was fighting for her life. She wanted to find the
others. Just one friend.
