Traffic signs, streetlights, and telephone poles were gone. Vicki saw a row of apartment buildings. Only
one stood above ground. The others had collapsed or had been swallowed whole by the earth.

Vicki walked over two yellow humps barely sticking out of the ground, then realized it was all that was
left of a fast-food restaurant.

Across the street, cars were piled on top of each other at a car dealership. A computer store stood at a
jagged angle, then slowly the walls caved in.

A bell rang behind her, and Vicki turned to see the steeple of a church crash to the ground. She
wondered about her own church and who might be there. Loretta? The rabbi? Had anyone else

had gone from day to night and now back to day with the glowing balls of fire.

The earth was still rolling under her feet. Vicki had to stay upright and avoid the hurtling meteors. They
seemed to smash everything the earthquake hadnтАЩt swallowed.

The heat from the meteors was intense. The smell was overwhelming.
When a meteor slammed into the ground, it exploded and sent molten rock flying. Vicki looked at the
horizon and saw an incredible sight.

Thousands of red streaks descended from the darkness above, pounding the ground with yellow bursts
of light. It looked like a Fourth of July celebration reversed. Instead of sending fireworks into the air, they
were coming down.

Vicki moved cautiously. The shaking of the earth was not an aftershock. The earthquake simply would
not quit. Though it had been less than half an hour, Vicki felt like it had been going on for days. With each
